A few weeks back, it was my good fortune to visit Montpelier. It may have been my favorite of the presidential homes I visited (the others being Mount Vernon, Ash Lawn, and Monticello). At all of these places I especially enjoyed visiting with the guides and other folks who are clearly passionate about what they do. At Montpelier, Jim Walker generously agreed to share some of his knowledge of James Madison, the father of the Constitution.

I live 90 minutes from Montpelier. It is an awesome place to visit. I have been there 2 times in the past 3 years. It has a very new visitor center and is still in the process of locating the original furnishings. When President Madison died in 1836 Dolley Madison inherited the property. However, she sold Montpelier out of the Madison family in 1844 after she decided to move permanently to Washington. After Montpelier passed out of the Madison family it was sold to a succession of owners before finally being purchased by William duPont in 1901. While the duPonts would make the most significant post Madison-era changes to Montpelier, the men who owned the Mansion between the Madison’s and duPont’s would also make significant changes. These changes have been dismantled and the house is back to the way it was in the time of James Madison. It is a fascinating visit, near Orange, Virginia.

Piperdoc, I really loved Montpelier. I envy your proximity. What a gorgeous place. I wish I could have spent more time there.
