After spending the better part of Wednesday at Monticello, I grabbed some lunch and made my way over to Ash Lawn – Highland, the home of President James Monroe and his family. The tour was interesting and informative, but again, my favorite part was speaking with some of the not-necessarily-guide guides.  Martha gives an interesting presentation of cooking techniques in the 19th Century. She’s become a master of the dutch oven! But, she also has made it her business to know a lot about the property and its history in general. It finally occurred to me that I should try and capture some of what she had to say! She was most gracious and agreed to let me video her remarks on how Ash Lawn – Highland came to be open to the public through the foresight of Jay Winston Johns:
