Saturday Links
It's been too long since we've published one of these. It is not indicative of a lack of good quality writing out there, as you'll see when you read these. Frankly, we've been in a bit of a funk here at WWTFT. Character and liberty seem to be under attack from every conceivable quarter. Whether it's Second Amendment Rights, governance by fiat in blatant disregard of the Constitution and ignoring court rulings (recess appointments), elevating homosexuality to the status of race by the President in his disgusting inaugural address, the BSA's rethinking of its longstanding policy against homosexual troop leaders, John Kerry as Secretary of State, Chuck Hegel as Secretary of Defense, the Gabby Gifford sympathy play... the list goes on.
Well, here's hoping you enjoy the links. Read the rest of this entry »

John Quincy Adams A Life by Harlow Giles Unger
Harlow Giles Unger's latest biography is, if possible, even better than his last. Unger does a superb job of illuminating a largely forgotten figure of American history - John Quincy Adams. Unger's book is a great place to start learning about the generation immediately following the country's founding. Mr. Unger’s descriptive powers continue to impress. He writes some of the most readable and informative biographies available. His latest on John Quincy Adams is certainly one of these. Read the rest of this entry »

Federalist No. 38
In this essay, Madison lays waste the arguments of the anti-Federalists. He uses powerful analogies to point out the inconsistent and incongruent logic used by those opposed to ratification. He explains that it might be one thing if the opponents of the proposed plan had a plan of their own and were in accord with one another. But they were not in agreement amongst themselves and some even denied the necessity of addressing the problems that nearly everyone saw as obvious. Read the rest of this entry »

This reviewer wasn't sure what to expect as Jim has been fairly close mouthed about the book himself, except to say that this book is his wife's favorite.* After reading it, it's easy to see why. It is difficult to talk about the story without giving away any of its many twists and turns, which on reflection, is probably why the author was so "shut mouth" about it. Well, here goes. A Defense of American Ideals by Thomas J Malone.
There is much to recommend in A Defense of American Ideals just as there is much to recommend in Ayn Rand's Atlas Shrugged. However, there is also much of which to be critical. Malone is relentless in his attack on Christianity and increases his level of vitriol as the book progresses. Read the rest of this entry »
