The Niles Register, while fairly impartial in many respects, was definitely an American newspaper, and supported the government’s prosecution of the War of 1812. In reading the editions which came out during the war, one can see that they employed whatever was at their disposal to unify the nation in support of “Mr. Madison’s War.”
Hence, the following excerpt of a letter from retired President John Adams, a confirmed Federalist, whose predisposition against the French and for the British, would nonetheless, take a back seat to his advocacy for the American cause.
