The Last Patriot by Brad Thor

The Last Patriot by Brad Thor
The Last Patriot is novel by Brad Thor, and admittedly not the sort of book normally reviewed on WWTFT. That being said, there was a clever tie-in to some things that are regularly covered on WWTFT. For one, President Thomas Jefferson is weaved into the plot as is Captain Isaac Hull, the man famous for sinking HMS Guerriere early in the War of 1812.

An Interesting Conversation

I had an interesting conversation today with two friends I’ve made over the past 18 months. One of them is from Ukraine and the other from Russia. First, some background: I’ve been brushing up on my Russian for the past 18 months or so, and was fortunate enough to make the acquaintance of these two men early on. They are both extremely gracious and patient with my butchering of their language, and we’ve been able to have many an interesting conversation.

America’s Role Model

The president told New Yorker interviewer David Remnick that Marijuana is no worse than alcohol or cigarettes. Reportedly, Obama also speculated that legalizing “hard” drugs, including cocaine and meth might ultimately be a matter of creating a “negotiated” or “calibrated” dose for safer use. Such sentiments uttered by the president are guaranteed to give every parent heartburn. Let’s hope these musings are just a consequence of going off the teleprompter.

A Warning: When Collapse Comes, It’s Quick and Total

Richard Fernandez has written an excellent piece on the causes and consequences of destroying a society from the inside out. Fernandez explains that the collapse of a society is deceptively slow ... until it isn't. There are inherent human responses that strive to perpetuate the illusion of normality, long after the point of no return.

When Did White Trash Become the New Normal? A Southern Lady Asks the Impertinent Question by Charlotte Hays

The degradation of the culture has many causes and Hays touches on most of them. This reviewer would have liked elaboration, but the author set out to expose White Trash Normal and be funny at the same time and she succeeded on both counts, a daunting task well done. It’s a rare writer who can be humorous and trenchant at the same time.

Basically, @BarackObama Is a Parody Twitter Account – The Wire

The Wire has an interesting story on the far-left organization Organizing for Action, which morphed out of the president's campaign organization with the same initials. Per Wikipedia: "Organizing for Action (OFA) is a nonprofit social welfare organization and community organizing project in the United States which advocates for the agenda of U.S. President Barack Obama. The organization is officially non-partisan, but its agenda and policies are strongly allied with the Democratic Party of which Obama is a member. It is the successor of Obama's 2012 re-election campaign and of Organizing for America, which itself succeeded Obama's 2008 campaign. "Founded after President Obama's re-election, the group seeks to mobilize supporters in favor of Obama's legislative priorities. OFA is registered as a 501(c)(4) organization, which may advocate for legislation but is prohibited from specifically supporting political candidates. OFA is organized as a grassroots organization, with local chapters that decide which issues to organize around. "

The Crucible of Change

A Crucible Moment: College Learning & Democracy’s Future is a report produced by the National Task Force on Civic Learning and Democratic. Engagement. The Task force was appointed and funded by the Department of Education, and the White House endorsed the subsequent report. It carries forward Barack Obama’s 2008 campaign vow to “transform” the nation, and Secretary of Education Arne Duncan’s 2013 pledge to do the same to education.

No Bias In The Media, “Not Even a Smidgen”

Sometimes you just stumble upon things that jump out at you. This blogger was looking for a reference to the president's recent interview with Bill O'Reilly in which he said there was "not even a smidgen of corruption" in the IRS. The results of this search were surprising.

Logic That Both Karl and Groucho Would Love

The Congressional Budget Office (CBO) recently reported that Obamacare is officially a job killer – to the tune of 2.5 million jobs over the next decade. To be fair, these aren’t actually jobs that people will lose. Rather, it will be people choosing to work fewer hours or not to work at all because they can now get insurance through Obamacare, rather than their employer – and it’ll be subsidized.
