Bill Maher’s sense of his own intellectual capabilities is not in doubt. Neither is his disdain for the American people. In his view half of the American people are simply too dumb to understand the debates.
Ironically, he may be correct – but the half that he thinks is too dumb to understand the issues is probably not the half that will watch the debates.
The half that he thinks is too dumb are those deluded by the nasty Republican machine – you know the ones who stubbornly cling to their religion and guns.
In reality, a more objective argument could be made. If you’re still enamored with President Obama – our “eye candy” president (his own words) after seeing the results of his policies, his abuse of power, and his unbridled cultivation of personal aggrandizement; then your intellect is certainly suspect.
In this 2009 video, Maher roundly criticizes the American people for being stupid. Some of the facts he cites:
Again, one has to wonder if Maher is aware of the indictment he is making.   In his mind the Tea Party is part of this stupid populace. But were you to poll teachers protesting in Chicago or the OWS crowds with questions on American government, the Constitution, the Bill of Rights, who their Congressman is, etc; how do you suppose they would fare pitted against the typical Tea Party rally asked the same questions?
In Maher’s mind the stupidity is centered on the ignorant hillbillies which make up the right:
I mean, that’s so disappointing,†Maher said. “You know – that’s the problem with this country. They say that there’s not enough bipartisanship. There’s too much. If there’s two parties and they’re both against weed, what do we have? I mean what’s the point of having Democrats? We have Democrats for one reason – to drag the ignorant hillbilly-half of this country into the next century, which in their case is the 19th
Maher is an elitist who lives in his own cocoon – he disdains the very people who have elevated him – and they are too stupid to recognize this fact.  In a February of 2010 appearance with Larry King, Maher said of the American people,
“… they are not bright enough to really understand the issues, but like an animal, they can sort of sense strength or weakness. They can smell it on you.”
Here are a few links from the very people Maher would have you believe represent the stupid majority of Americans. (Majority – maybe, stupid – don’t see it.) Read the articles by these bloggers and see if you can figure out how Maher draws his conclusions – I can’t.

Thanks for the link! Your theme fits with my theme this weekend- that there are way too many outstanding and amazing and great people out there to let Barack Obama or George Bush control their lives or their property. Check out my post “Man is Born Free, and Everywhere He is in Chains… Let’s Break the Chains and Be Great Again”
